External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar thanked the United Kingdom for its strong support in India’s fight against terrorism, particularly following the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. The remarks were made during a meeting with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy in New Delhi. India-UK Cooperation in the Fight Against Terrorism

During the delegation-level talks, EAM Jaishankar expressed gratitude to the UK for condemning the Pahalgam attack and for standing in solidarity with India in the global fight against terrorism. He reiterated India’s policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism, stressing that India expects its partners to fully understand and support this stance. Jaishankar emphasized that those responsible for such attacks must be brought to justice, and no attempt should be made to equate the perpetrators with the victims.

Strengthening India-UK Strategic Relations

Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s visit focuses on enhancing the economic and migration partnership between the two countries. Jaishankar welcomed Lammy back to India, highlighting the strengthened India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership across all sectors. He also noted the success of recent high-level political and official interactions between the two nations.

A key milestone discussed during the talks was the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed on May 6, which is expected to drive significant growth in bilateral trade and investment. Jaishankar also mentioned the Double Contribution Convention, which will positively impact strategic aspects of their relationship, including supply and value chain strengthening.

Collaborating on Strategic Technology Sectors

Jaishankar highlighted several initiatives that have progressed since Lammy’s last visit. He specifically pointed out the Technology Security Initiative (TSI), which aims to foster deeper collaboration in critical technology sectors such as AI, semiconductors, telecom, quantum technologies, and bio-tech. Furthermore, the launch of the Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue is expected to enhance collaboration in these sectors, addressing regulatory and licensing challenges.

Enhancing UK-India Economic and Infrastructure Ties

The EAM also spoke about the potential of the UK-India infrastructure financial bridge to unlock long-term capital flows from the UK to India, supporting infrastructure development in India. According to UK government projections, the new trade deal is set to increase bilateral trade by over £25 billion annually, raising the UK’s GDP by £4.8 billion and boosting wages by £2.2 billion each year, which will have tangible economic benefits for working-class citizens.

Expanding Educational and Consular Ties

Jaishankar further mentioned the strong collaboration between the two countries in the education sector, with several UK universities planning to establish campuses in India. He also highlighted the opening of new consulates in Manchester and Belfast, underscoring the growing people-to-people ties between India and the UK.
