The UK government has reintroduced the Cold Weather Payment scheme for winter 2024-25 to help citizens cope with extreme cold. The scheme provides financial assistance to eligible residents when temperatures drop significantly.

The first payments were released earlier when temperatures hit zero degrees or lower for seven consecutive days. The government has set specific postcodes where payments are applicable, ensuring that those in the most affected areas receive support.

For winter 2024-25, the Cold Weather Payment is active between 1 November 2024 and 31 March 2025. Residents living in qualifying postcodes will receive a payment when temperatures remain at or below zero degrees Celsius for seven consecutive days.

With severe weather warnings about snow and ice in parts of the UK, many regions are now eligible for the Cold Weather Payment.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that payments for the period 2 January to 9 January 2025 will be issued to 18 specific postcodes.

Cold Weather Payment Amount

Eligible residents receive £25 for each seven-day period of freezing temperatures between 1 November 2024 and 31 March 2025. This payment helps cover increased energy costs due to the extreme cold.

The payment is automatic for those already receiving qualifying benefits. It will be processed in the same way as other government support payments.

It’s important to note that Cold Weather Payments are different from Winter Fuel Payments. While Winter Fuel Payments are given to pensioners regardless of weather conditions, Cold Weather Payments are triggered only when temperatures drop significantly.

How and When Will You Receive the Payment?

The Cold Weather Payment is automatically credited to those who qualify. If your area experiences a cold spell of seven consecutive days, the payment will be deposited into your bank or building society account within 14 working days.

However, there is an exception:
If you have a child under five living with you and receive Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), or Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), you must inform Jobcentre Plus to receive the payment.

For payments covering 2 January to 9 January 2025, eligible residents should expect their funds by the end of January 2025.

What to Do If You Don’t Receive the Payment

If you qualify but haven’t received your Cold Weather Payment, take the following steps:

  1. Contact Jobcentre Plus or the Pension Service – If you receive benefits linked to these departments, call to inquire about your payment status.
  2. Check Your Universal Credit Account – If you’re on Universal Credit, sign in and leave a message in your journal or call the Universal Credit helpline at 0800 328 5644.

With more cold spells expected, UK residents in eligible postcodes should stay informed and check for updates on additional payments.
